European Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology
Are you so passionate about veterinary dermatology that you would devote your entire career to it? Would you like to find out how to become a European Specialist or a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Dermatology? If so, you might find the following lines useful.
In order to obtain the title of European Diploma in Veterinary Dermatology recognized by the EBVS (European Board of European Specialties) a residency program is required. The title of European Diplomate is the title of European Specialist and is the highest degree of specialization. Attention! This title is not academic and is not related to the title of lecturer, professor, etc. It is a title issued by the European College of Veterinary Dermatology (ECVD) and is recognized by EBVS.
The Diploma of European Diplomate/Specialist is obtained on the basis of a board examination, and entry to this examination can only be done after obtaining all the required credentials during the residency program.
What is the residency program?
The residency program is approved by the ECVD and represents an intense and in-depth program of study in veterinary dermatology. The program allows for all credentials required by the ECVD educational committee. Once the resident obtains these credentials (residency project, international publications, case reports, fulfillment of the minimum number of evaluated cases, etc.), they can take the board examination. Passing this examination allows them to become a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Dermatology. Two forms of residency are available: formal (standard) and alternative.
How to become a resident?
A minimum of 2 years of general practice is required before applying for a residency or the veterinarian is encouraged to complete a minimum of 1 year of rotational internship.
The resident needs a mentor, an ECVD Diplomate with whom they will go through all the steps of the residency. Any residency program must be approved by the ECVD educational committee and is based on all the rules imposed by the college. The resident must have knowledge of the language of the country where the residency will take place.
